Boy Spyce EP

On 15th of April 2022, Mavin records launched a young new act; BOY SPYCE, just months after the success of Arya Starr and Magixx.

Although the name definitely reminds you of Reekado Banks’ former moniker “Spicy”, that’s as far as it goes when it comes to a comparison in artistry. Boy Spyce and Reekado Banks are nowhere near each other in terms of range, vocal delivery or even finesse.

On his self-titled EP, Boy Spyce makes a scintillating Afro pop delivery with fine tuned cultural references that keep you at the edge of your sit. Whether he’s dropping his ultimate love gems, reminiscing on how much he’s been dedicated to chasing his dreams, or recounting a toxic situationship, it is evident that Boy Spyce is ready for greatness after a 2-year learning stint at the Mavin Academy since getting contacted by Label CEO Don Jazzy, on the 25th of December, 2019.

Track-by-Track Review of the EP

DREAMS
On this record, Spyce launches into a sonorous distinction between dreams and priorities as his love interest packs up to leave in search of her dreams.

As much as this is a basic love song where one lover yearns for attention from the other, it is in the same breadth a wake up call to other young minds whose dreams are unconventional, who’ve chosen to sing their hearts out to the world against going to school and getting degrees.

Dreams is a love record that expresses the deepest emotions without any loss of self awareness. It is undoubtedly the most relatable record on the EP, and hands down the best joint on project BoySpyce.

BAD THINGS
Bad Things is the most sensual record on the project just like the title suggests. Boy Spyce shows off his vocal prowess on this joint, spinning his sensual lyrics with wanton finesse.

“…Watching say now
Face down
Off your heels and your grey gown
Shey you shave now
Lay down
Make I chop you like wafer…”

Boy Spyces’ delivery of these raunchy lines open up a pathway into how things are done at the Mavin academy. A rookie with this much dexterity while serving up such dope lines can only be a product of raw talent and hard-work.

WAYO
WAYO is a lesson in comical appraisal. It’s the third track off the self titled EP, and it’s a laid back Afropop track that scintillates the ear.

NOBODY
NOBODY is undoubtedly one of the most successful records on the Boy Spyce EP. It’s another aptly delivered love song that’s got all the ladies bumping in and out of the club. On this record, Spyce declares his undying loyalty to a love interest, reiterating his unwillingness to move on even if everything comes crumbling down.

It’s a great record, perfect for romance and a great addition to heartbreak playlists.

DESTINY
On Destiny, Boy Spyce takes a shot at spirituality, hence giving a well deserving outro to a greatly curated project.

“Person work hard you dey call am grace
When you dey sleep e dey work for rain
I no wan talk before dem go say
This small boy don come again…”

Produced by AndreVibez, son of Afrobeats legend Sir Victor Uwaifo who was one of the breakout producers of 2021.

Rating: 7/10

Comments: Fantastic debut from Mavin records and BoySpyce. This EP is a lesson on how to make an impactful debut with 5 songs or less.
